Most of Polk sits outside the wind-borne debris region
Floridaβs wind-borne debris region covers land within a mile of the coast where the design wind speed reaches 130 mph, plus anywhere the design speed reaches 140 mph. Inside it, the building code requires protected openings β impact glass or approved shutters. Most of inland Polk falls outside those thresholds, so a Lakeland home generally is not required to carry opening protection, and carriers price the wind exposure differently than they would an identical house in Pinellas or Lee. It is one of the clearest reasons a Polk premium can look nothing like a coastal quote on a similar property.
